Major Agenda: De-risking research innovations and entrepreneurship for transformation in the changing world.
Conference Background and Rationale
Climate change represents one of the most significant challenges to sustainable development for transformation, economic stability and environmental resilience worldwide. Its impacts ranging from extreme weather events and resource scarcity, disruptions to humanitarian crisis in supply chains and livelihoods these are increasingly affecting businesses, communities, and national economies.
Due to increasing number of innovations from universities and manufacturing industries, the emerging Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) they are forming the backbone of the economies and they are the key drivers of innovation, employment, and economic growth. Yet in many countries particularly in developing countries SMEs are becoming vulnerable to climate impacts. At the same time, SMES with green innovations hold considerable potential to contribute to climate solutions through innovation, adoption of sustainable practices, and the development of climate-responsive technologies and services. However, many SMEs both local and international institutions continue to face barriers such as limited technical capacity, mechanisms, pathways to contributes to transformations over insufficient access to finance, and inadequate engagement in policy for transformation and research processes at every stage.
In response to these challenges, this conference seeks to create a collaborative platform that brings together SMEs, Governments, banks, companies, development institutions policymakers, private and public sector actors, universities, research institutions, development partners and manufacturing industries to share experiences, document and strengthen partnerships and accelerate climate action for transformation. The conference aims to foster dialogue on enabling policies for transformation, promote research and innovation, improve access to climate finance especially for mid-career researchers, SMEs, innovators, manufacturing industriesand facilitate knowledge exchange for investment between local and international stakeholders both from academia and non-academic fields for transformation.
By addressing these capacity gaps, the initiative aims to promote coordinated action that transforms research ideas into practical outcomes. It seeks to support the development and implementation of scalable solutions that strengthen climate resilience while facilitating economic transformation. In doing so, it also aims to unlock investment opportunities within green finance frameworks, including instruments such as green bonds and net-zero carbon initiatives. These efforts are aligned with the priorities outlined in Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCCs) and broader climate commitments of developing countries.
Why initiatives like Green Bonds Matter for SMEs and innovators
Although large institutions usually issue green bonds, SMEs, researchers and innovators benefit indirectly and major limitation to scaling and transformation:
- Green technology startups
- Climate-smart agriculture
- Sustainable manufacturing
- Energy-efficient infrastructure projects
- Mapping potential impact for each and scalability
The conference will be structured around the following thematic areas.
Recognizing the growing urgency of climate change and its implications for sustainable development and transformation. This conference aims to bring together small and medium enterprises (SMEs), policymakers, private sector actors, academic institutions, and development partners to strengthen collaboration and accelerate climate-responsive and transformative solutions. The conference will provide a platform to exchange knowledge, promote innovation, and show ways of mobilising resources that enable SMEs and institutions, individuals and researchers to contribute effectively to climate adaptation and mitigation efforts for transformation with limited risks.
Theme 1: Strengthening Institutional Capacity for Climate Action
This theme focuses on enhancing the technical and institutional capacity of SMEs and relevant agencies, innovators, public and private companies to plan, develop, and implement climate change adaptation and mitigation initiatives, while expanding opportunities to access public and private climate finance.
Theme 2: Promoting Climate Research, Innovation, and Technology transformation
This theme aims at how to create awareness on supporting SMEs, innovators, universities, and research institutions in transforming and implementing climate-related research programs. It will also emphasize strengthening collaboration with the private, public sector in improving access, the use of available materials to support transformation in technologies, and research infrastructure.
Theme 3: Advancing Policy Dialogue and Climate Finance Mechanisms for transformation
This theme will facilitate engagement between governments, the private sector, and academic institutions, individuals to discuss policy actions and regulatory frameworks that enable climate-responsive and transformative investments. Particular attention will be given to de-risking mechanisms and innovative financial instruments such as green bonds etc.
Theme 4: Supporting Integrated Programs for Sustainable Development and Transformation
This theme will explore pathways for accessing and implementing integrated programs that promote sustainable development and transformation, climate resilience, and structural economic transformation.
Theme 5: Enhancing Awareness of Climate Finance, Policies, and Processes
This theme seeks to raise awareness and improve understanding among SMEs and mid-career innovators of available climate financing opportunities, policy frameworks, and institutional processes that support climate-responsive investments in research and transformation for resilience.
Theme 6: Facilitating Knowledge Exchange and Skills Development for transformation
This theme will emphasize the importance of knowledge transfer, capacity building for transformation, and collaboration between local stakeholders and international partners to strengthen skills, share best practices, and accelerate scalable innovation.
Theme 7. Forest, wildlife and biodiversity sustainability
Afforestation, Reforestation and Sustainable Forestry management and certified forestry
operations, role of CDM, RED and REDD+ projects (Reducing Emissions from
Deforestation and forest Degradation). Habitat protection and managing wildlife
habitats. Nature-Based Solutions, wetlands and creating natural carbon sinks. Pollution
Control and reduce industrial pollution, protecting both aquatic and terrestrial species.
Resilience and Mitigation, enhancing the climate resilience.
